n8n is a workflow automation tool that teams can use in its cloud service or run on their own infrastructure. Workflows are built from nodes on a canvas, and any step can drop into JavaScript or Python when a ready-made node is not enough. Its source code is available under a fair-code license, which allows self-hosting with some limits on commercial use.
It has become popular for AI work because it includes nodes for building agents, connecting models, adding memory and calling tools, all inside the same workflow as ordinary steps. Self-hosting gives you control over where data stays, and it also makes you responsible for updates, backups, credentials and uptime. Teams without someone to run servers usually start with the cloud version.
